Artists to hold 'Drawn In' at the Royal Ontario Museum
to protest war
against Iraq- March 22, 2003- Artists and citizens
will gather at the Royal OntarioMuseum in Toronto
on Saturday, March 29 to hold a 'Drawn In' to protest
war against Iraq.
This event is being organized to recognize the rich
culture and people of Iraq -- a heritage that spans
5000 years. We in Canada will gather to draw in the
Mesopotamian and Islamic collectionat the Royal Ontario
Museum from 1:00 PM to 5:00 pm. (third floor of theROM).
'Drawn In' is inspired by an action organized by
"Artists Against theWar" in New York City
when 500 people gathered at the Metropolitan Museum
onMarch 5, 2003.
On March 29, 2003 any member of the Art Gallery of
Ontario is able to enterthe ROM on their AGO member's
card.
Bring your pencils and paper and pay tribute to the
land referred to as the"cradle of civilization".
Long before Greece, Egypt and Rome were established
the area between theTigris and Euphrates rivers gave
rise to ancient civilizations such as:Sumer, Babylonia
and Assyria. The first written alphabet, the first
instances of recorded literature, the wheel, the
first plough, the earliest calendars, the first agrarian
and urban centres, and the influential, far reaching
legal document known as,Hammurabi's code were born
there.
The bombing of Iraq under a United States-led war
is destroying the peopleof Iraq along side their
precious cultural history.
The peaceful 'Drawn In' stands in solidarity with
the Iraqi people and draws attention to the flourishing
of law, science, art, architecture and poetryof the
respective civilizations whose cultural memory we
will pay tributethough our drawings.
