Dissent Sticker Project There can be no effective dissent without freedom of speech and assembly. Since September 11, 2001 and the passage of the Patriot Act these freedoms have been compromised by law or challenged in the public arena. The transparent stickers seem to clarify the meaning of the ubiquitous flags and to perhaps subvert the messages of advertising in New York State. Citizens who have spoken out against the Bush Administration, both elected officials and public personalities, have been derided, fired, or accused of being disloyal to their country. Those who attempt to silence freedom of expression are opposed to the ideals and values that are the foundation of this Republic. There are Americans across this country who appear to be unfamiliar with the history of the struggle for the preservation and extension of our civil liberties, granted us by the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the United States. These stickers are an attempt to remind them that dissent is patriotic.

"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and cause me to tremble for the sake of my country. Corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed." - Abraham Lincoln, 1864 |
